The Dos and Don’ts of Rabbits

  1. The best method for controlling rabbits is to fence your property – use rabbit proof fencing.
  2. Be sure to follow all state laws which govern wildlife and always be compliant with these laws.
  3. Work with your neighbours. It’s likely they’re experiencing the same problems.
  4. Look out for signs of rabbits which include burrows with footprints and nearby traces of dung.
  5. Keep a rough estimate of the number of rabbits on your property
  6. Trim under hedges and thickets of scrub to destroy possible refuge places for rabbits. Before you proceed however, make sure the rabbits are underground (running dogs over the area can help with this).
  7. Be careful of indigenous vegetation in your area as they are protected under local government planning schemes.
  8. Keep dogs away from baits and poisoned carcasses.

Some information about Rabbits

Rabbits seem cute at first but this doesn’t exclude them from the pest category. In fact, in Australia rabbits are the number one pest problem. Rabbits breed prolifically which makes them a rabid, widespread pest. Rabbits are quite territorial, and relocating them to another place won’t necessarily make the problem go away. It’s also worth noting that rabbits are not native to Australia and it only took 24 rabbits in the beginning before they bred and became a widespread problem. The numbers currently sit somewhere between 200 and 300 million in Australia.

You can still be affected by rabbits, even if you don’t have any on your property. Keep an eye out for tell tale signs like grass that never needs mowing or noises under the house (let’s hope they’re just rabbits). Rabbits are also highly dependent on shelter. Any program to control rabbits will fail if burrows and harbour are not destroyed. This should be done after fumigation or poisoning to ensure they won’t return. The rabbit can only die if it eats the bait but make sure that other animals don’t fall for it too.

Is it true that rabbits will go after carrot bait? Yes! Best results for treating rabbits are achieved with good quality carrot bait.
