Common Brushtail Possum

The Dos and Don’ts of Possums

  1. Do not act on the issue unless the possum is causing problems.
  2. Do not simply resort to the killing of animals. Assess the extent of the problem and then decide how to deal with it in a humane way.
  3. Possums can only be trapped if they are inhabiting roof spaces or other areas of a building. The trapping of possums requires a licence. Sherlock has a licence & can therefore assist you with the removal of possums from your buildings.
  4. To deter the possums from eating from your garden, spray the plant with a bitter product (we suggest minced garlic that has been boiled and made into a liquid spray)
  5. Trim back tree branches from fences so they can’t jump around as easily.
  6. Remove any fruit that falls to the ground
  7. Do not feed possums!
  8. You can always make an alternative, weatherproof possum house.

Some information about Possums

‘Is there a possum on the roof?’

Many Australians are forced to venture outside and see what’s making that entire racket up there. Possums are nocturnal animals native to Australia. Urbanisation means that there are less natural habitats for such animals. Possums usually live in tree hollows but with less trees and a territorial nature, possums find it hard to relocate and will instead try to find sanctuary on your roof! Such wildlife are now looking to live with humans – but this is has its fair share of problems too.

Possums are protected species with laws in place to ensure this. If you find a possum on your property, don’t panic. If it is not causing problems, there is no need to act. You can enjoy being able to observe real wildlife on your property but always be careful as they are wild animals. One problem may be that they are eating your garden. Assess to what extent this is causing you problems. Are they eating fruit, roses or other important vegetation? Possums are only trying to survive with limited natural habitats as a result of urbanisation. If the problem persists, you can contact a professional and they can advise you on how serious the situation is and what you can do.
