The Dos and Don’ts of Pantry Pests (Stored Product Pests)
- Maintain high standards of sanitation and hygiene to avoid the build up of food in corners and crevices.
- Have your kitchen and home regularly inspected and monitored for signs of infestation, particularly stored items for both opened and unopened products.
- Take care when purchasing packaged foods - foods should be checked for signs of an infestation if the packaging allows such inspection.
- Look for signs of holes or webbing in the packaging.
- Look through cakes mixes, spices, cookies, crackers and shake them a little bit, inspecting them thoroughly and discarding anything that appears suspicious.
- If you do find evidence of any insects, take out all products and thoroughly vacuum cabinets, especially where there are cracks and crevices.
- Discard all unused food.
- Look out for small beetles or moths in the kitchen or pantry.
- Store food in airtight containers to keep out female eggs that might choose to lay there!
- Use chemical methods to keep the infestation under control.
Some information about Pantry Pests (Stored Product Pests)
We like to think our homes are secure and we've done everything we possibly can to ensure that our food and produce is pest free. This is why pantry pests can be the most infuriating type of pest, as they are hard to detect, until the damage is already done. The other annoying point is that they often come in food that hasn't been opened yet. These pests can come straight from the factory or if the food has been processed, they can also come from seeds, herbs or other natural products that are stored away in our homes. Careful attention must be paid to the storage and handling of all foodstuffs. Pantry pests and other food pests have always been a problem, as food has always needed storage at some point in time.
Some information about Pantry Pests
Stored product pests come about when food is handled, either from the farm where the food is harvested or through various processing facilities, before it arrives to your kitchen. These infestations are particularly problematic in on-farm silos, regional silos, mills, warehouses, food-processing plants, stores, bakeries, canteens, restaurants and homes.
These beetles and bugs can infest grains and cause problems due to poor sanitation and clean up practices so best to nip it in the bud as soon as possible by keeping everything spick and span.
