Some information about Bird Mites

Bird mites are found wherever birds and their nests are located. These mites feed off birds roosting on the outside of window ledges or awnings. They thrive on this environment, but when the nests are disturbed, the young leave the nest or the birds die, the mites need to find new hosts. This is how almost tens of thousands of mites come to search through the dwelling for human hosts. They may search your home, climbing on walls, ceilings and bedding, looking for its next meal. They will bite any humans they can find but cannot survive on them alone. They will die after approximately three weeks without a bird to feed off.

Bird mites are problematic as they often inject saliva into human skin, causing severe rashes, irritation and itching. Although they don’t transmit any serious diseases, they still cause infections. It’s also a very unpleasant experience and should be treated immediately by a medical practitioner. They are hard to see as they are clear in colour, until they bite the skin and blood has been digested. When this has happened, they appear reddish to blackish in colour. Bird mites do not fly but can float down from the ceiling onto the host skin. This is often how the infestation begins, as they can float down from trees outside onto humans, thus transporting them in to the home.

How to treat the problem

Bird mites are most active during spring and early summer. It’s essential to identify the correct type of bird mite before attempting to treat this infestation otherwise the treatment will be rendered futile. As long as the nest or the bird source of the problem continues to exist, the bird mites will continue to pose a problem for you and your family.
