Dos and Don’ts of Bees and Wasps

  1. Take care at picnics or outdoor BBQs. Keep food covered at all times and do not drink directly out of cans or bottles to avoid swallowing a wasp!
  2. Seek urgent medical aid if bitten multiple times by a wasp, especially if stung in the throat. Otherwise an icepack or anaesthetic spray applied to the bite will do.
  3. Try not to get in the way of swarms of bees or wasps.
  4. Do not approach the nest or try to eradicate it yourself. Call a pest inspector.

Some information about Bees and Wasps

It’s dangerous to attempt to deal with bees and wasps without professional help and the right equipment as they have a powerful sting. European wasps are distinguished from bees by their longer antennas, bright yellow markings, black fronts, and black dots in between black stripes on their sides. The best way to tell the difference between bees and wasps is that European wasps have yellow legs whereas bees have black legs.

Bees have long pervaded popular culture and are famous for their love of honey. They are a duller shade of yellow, sometimes a golden brown colour, with stripes but no dots like the wasps.

Where do they set up nest?

European wasps can be found nesting in trees, ceilings, walls and other holes but it’s most common to find them nesting in the ground. These holes can be hidden depending on where they’re found, but generally you can spot them. Bees are usually found in trees or holes in the wall.

Are they dangerous?

European wasps tend to be aggressive. This is a serious pest however as European wasps will defend their nests with gusto. Their sting attacks can be painful. Multiple stings or a sting to the throat can be fatal.

You have to establish which direction the wasps are heading in to find the nest. In order to do this, we recommend placing a food source in a visible location. When the wasp has collected the food, keep an eye out to where it returns. That’s where the nest will be.

Bees are not aggressive and will usually just carry on as usual (unless provoked).
